Many people take vitamins on a daily basis to boost their immune system and to keep them healthy. Vitamins can be supplied as a tablet, a drink or even as a sweet like jelly for younger children. They can be mixed with many types of vitamins called multi vitamins or just contain one of two vitamins.
There are debates as to if multi vitamins actually help or benefit people but may people swear by them.
Vitamins should never be used as a substitute for a healthy diet. Some vitamins also have side effects, especially if taken in large numbers or over a long period of time. Side effects can include headaches, tooth staining, nausea and diarrhoea. There can also be more serious side effects such as stomach bleeding, uneven heart rate and convulsions.
Before taking vitamins, you may wish to seek the advice of a health professional such as a doctor or nurse.
I think often we forget how important it is to stay hydrated and to drink water. The guidelines state that we should be drinking about 8 pints of water a day but often the majority of us only drink about 3. Drinking tea, coffee and fizzy drinks are not the same as drinking water as often they contain caffeine which can actually dehydrate you.
If you are struggling to drink enough water then you may find that you feel lethargic, have a lower immunity system and have bad hair and skin. If this is the case then why not fill a few bottles up of water or squash and ensure that you drink your full 8 pints every day. Trial it for a week or two and see how different you feel. Lots of people that have done this make a permanent change stating that they feel a lot better having drank the water they needed to.
We are all guilty of saying that we simply do not have the time to exercise. We get dragged in to our daily routines and struggle to fit in time to go to the gym or join a fitness class in order to stay healthy. When talking about exercise with friends and family, it is surprising to find out how many of us think that in order to exercise we need to be a member of the gym, exercise can be done anywhere. For many people, going to the gym is their worst nightmare and for some it can be quite intimidating especially if they think that they will not fit in. Before committing to a monthly membership why not start off by doing more exercise in the home. There are some great DVDs or free videos to watch on You Tube that can help or simply swapping the usual car school trip to a walking school trip will benefit the whole family.
When many of us think about our health we think about a trip to the doctors, but your health is not just linked to your well being and medical situation, going to the dentist should also be included in our health routine.
A routine check up is often only carried out every 12 months just to check that are teeth and gums are ok and that we do not require any work such as fillings etc. This can take as little as 10-15 mins but a dentist can quickly pick up on any issues often fixing them before they have really become a problem.
If you have children you should also take them to the dentist from the age of two. They will often have an informal examination and the dentist will often use this time to introduce them to the setting and the equipment they will be using on them.
Looking after your health from a young age can have a massive effect on your wellbeing as you get older. If you lead an unhealthy lifestyle in your teens, drink too much, smoke, eat unhealthy meals all the time then you may get away with it but as you get older you may develop problems that are very had to rectify.
Smoking is a number one cause of cancer in the UK and despite this fact, still many of us do it. It may be that when you are younger you do not really consider the health risks or think that it will never happen to you but the fact is that 1 in 3 of us on average do develop some sort of cancer so surely we should try and illuminate this as much as possible.
Going to the doctors for a health MOT is a great way to find out how you are and if there are any areas of your lifestyle that you need to consider changing in order to improve your health.
